It's not always easy. That's probably why so many people understand his famous poem "The Road Less Traveled" exactly the opposite of the way I understand it. I think his tone was heavily ironic, but it seems as if most readers miss the irony completely, and think it's about picking the less traveled, and therefore better, path in life. But his real point is that people choose a path among paths that look essentially equal at the beginning; and then afterwards justify that choice to themselves. Interpreting this poem depends on the reader picking up on the ironic tone. I bet anything if people could hear Robert Frost read the poem aloud -- hear the irony in his voice -- more people would "get" it.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5437575288668955633.post-65979383445769281712011-10-05T13:28:52.448-07:002011-10-05T13:28:52.448-07:00Be confined no more! In fact, I just to to bed this week's column for the Chieftain on just this subject, here's a sampling: <br /><br /><br />"In short, what may be politically incorrect today may, become a classic tomorrow, begging the question, how do we know the difference? The answer: we don’t. We simply must let Lady Liberty and Father Time be the judges. Those with liberty must be responsible. And those offended by how those liberties are sometimes expressed, must be tolerant. And if you’re not how this works on a practical level, heed the words of Supreme Court justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. “The right to swing my fist ends where the other man's nose begins”."Amy Sandberghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09931129283921218686noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5437575288668955633.post-37588687755193955482010-03-21T01:04:27.872-07:002010-03-21T01:04:27.872-07:00Writing requires us to make some noise!
